Large 8vo. 10 x 7.5 inches. xvi + 221 pp. Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, in pictorial unclipped dust wrapper, which has light foxing. Slight traces of foxing on fore edge and rear flyleaf; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by colour frontispiece and by 52 pages of black and white plates. Erna Auberbach (1887-1975) was a German born artist and art historian, who researched early German portrait painters. After moving to London in 1933, she studied at the Courtauld Gallery on artists of the Tudor Court and wrote another dissertation on patronage and painting in sixteenth century England, developed into the subject of this title, her first published book.
