Small 8vo. 6.5 x 4.25 inches. [vi] + 183 pp. Bound in contemporary red grained leather with decorative blind stamped borders on both boards; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt. All edges gilt. Inner dentelles. Minor wear to extremities and some foxing of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by device on title page. An early edition of Tennyson's blank verse narrative poem, The Princess, revised after its first publication in 1847. It relates the story of Princess Ida, who rejects the male world and founds a women's university, whose entrance is forbidden to men. The plot develops when the prince, to whom she was betrothed in infancy, enters the university with two friends all disguised as women students. One of the factors influencing the poet was the founding of the country's first college for women, Queen's College, London in 1847. An attractively bound copy.
