Large 8vo. 9.75 x 6.75 inches. 224 pp. Bound in cream cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrapper. A very good copy. Illustrated throughout by woodcuts and line drawings, including frontispiece, mostly dating from the same period as the text, by C. F. Tunnicliffe. Decorated by title page and chapter heading vignettes. A selection from the seventy two papers of notes on nature and country life written by the author for the Catholic Fireside weekly magazine, By Flora Thompson (1876-1947), best known for her autobiographical trilogy, Lark Rise to Candleford (first published in one volume in 1945 under this title). The papers were written, 1922-27 while her husband was postmaster at Liphook, Hants. The Peverel Society founded in 1925, was closely linked to Flora Thompson and the Catholic Fireside, the papers developing from her earlier nature notes for that magazine. Edited by publisher, Julian Shuckburgh (1940-2021). Illustrated by Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79) a renowned bird artist, and illustrator of numerous books on wildlife and rural life, including six books by Henry Williamson from Tarka the Otter (1932 edition) onwards, and later of many Ladybird books.
