TWO VOLUMES. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. The First Phase, 240 pp.; The Second Phase, 221 pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, in unclipped dust wrappers, The First Phase having sunned spine. A little sunning of upper and lower board edges and slight browning and foxing of endpapers. Page edges foxed, notably top edges; otherwise a very good set. 1951 signatures on first free endpapers. Illustrated by 16 black and white pages of plates, including 2 frontispieces, and by diagram in text. A two volume set providing a detailed political history of the Jacobite movement from the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the extinction of the exiled Stuart dynasty in 1807. Part of the text appeared in a shorter text of this title in 1932. The historian, Charles Petrie (1895-1977), with his royalist interests, sympathised with right wing causes and some of the European dictators like Mussolini and Franco, in the inter-war years, before moving to a more centrist conservative viewpoint.
