Hans Francis Hastings (1779-1825) was a serving naval officer, whose ancestors had held the earldom of Huntingdon which had become dormant in 1789, although claimed by his uncle who died in 1804. His case was taken up by his friend, Henry Nugent Bell (1792-1822) a genealogist and legal antiquary and Bell's successful advocacy persuaded the Attorney General to rule in favour of the right of Hastings to the title and to sit in the House of Lords, in 1818. In this book Bell prefaces a long memoir of the House of Hastings to an account of his investigation of the claim, full of curious anecdotes and adventures and he also includes the full Report of the Attorney-General sent to the Prince Regent. A second edition appeared in 1821.
