Notes
The drama and verse of the Jacobean playwright, John Ford (c.1586-c.1640), including the text of nine plays. William Gifford (1756-1826), the editor, was educated at Exeter College, Oxford after a turbulent childhood in Devon. A gifted satirist he edited the Anti-Jacobin for the Tory government, 1797-98 but as editor of the Quarterly Review from 1809-24, concentrated on literary work, also editing the works of other Jacobean dramatists, including Philip Massinger and Ben Jonson.
