8vo. 7.25 x 5.25 inches. 258 pp. + [4] pp. publisher's list. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt; front board with black borders enclosing block of dog. A little wear to extremities, including corners and head and tail of spine and front hinge starting to crack. Scattered foxing, including flyleaves, fore edge and margins; otherwise a very good copy. Pencil underlinings, p. 20-21. Illustrated by 13 wood engraved plates, including frontispiece. Following an introduction, the book discusses the attributes of some forty breeds of dog. Thomas Pearce (1820-85), writing under the pseudonym,'Idstone,' was a clergyman, who held four curacies and then two livings, and was an authority on dogs, being a breeder of champion setters. Illustrated by George Earl (1824-1808), sportsman and artist, specialising in the painting of sporting dogs. The first edition was published 1872.
