Traces of sunning on lower board edges and browning of flyleaves; otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece and by map in text. Account of the overseas career of Sir Thomas Maitland (c.1759-1824), Scottish army officer, politician and MP and colonial administrator. After early service in the West Indies, he was appointed Governor of Ceylon, 1805-11. Peninsular War army service was followed by his becoming Governor of Malta from 1813 and also, after 1815 Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, a British Protectorate from 1815. Reprints the text of the first edition of 1939.
