An indictment of war by the German physiologist and pacifist, Georg Friedrich Nicolai (1874-1964). On the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he issued the anti-war Manifesto to the Europeans. As result he lost his University and hospital posts in Berlin and was sent to a remote area as a garrison physician. In 1916 he managed to publish Die Biologie des Krieges (Leipzig) and was court-martialled but escaped to Denmark. Although he returned to his posts in Germany after the War, he came under pressure form right wing student groups and in 1922 decided to emigrate, first to Argentina and then to Chile. The Biology of War was translated into several languages. This copy was owned by Professor Eileen Power (1889-1940), British economic historian and medievalist. In 1919 she was still Director of Studies in History at Girton College, Cambridge (1913-21). As Professor of Economic History at LSE, in 1933 she joined with the Director, William Beveridge in setting up the Academic Freedom Committee to assist academics escaping Nazi Germany.
