8vo. 6 x 4 inches. xxvi + 600 pp. + [8] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with gilt spine decoration. Extremities a little worn and dulled and foxing, of fore edge and flyleaves, occasional elsewhere; otherwise a very good copy. Narrative of the author's travels in the Iberian peninsular, where, as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, he was attempting to distribute Spanish translations of the New Testament and meeting with considerable opposition from the Catholic Church and the authorities. George Borrow (1803-81) is also known for his Romany writings, including the novels, Lavengro and The Romany Rye. The Bible In Spain, first published in 1842, is also a source of information on Romanies.
