A compact but comprehensive practical guide to classical architecture, as interpreted by the great architects of the Italian Renaissance, especially Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507-1573). His main works were churches and villas in Rome and central Italy and his two published books helped to formulate the principles of classical architectural style as practised in western Europe for the next three centuries. The plates for John Billington's book are dated 1829 and the British Library copy, although evidently undated on the title page, is ascribed to this year. COPAC has no record of another copy of this 1833 version of the first edition, although the enlarged second edition of 1834 is much more common. This appears to have been reprinted in 1848.
