8vo. 9 x 6 inches. [xii]+ 112 pp. + [1] pp. publisher's advertisements. Bound in original dark green cloth, gilt, in plain dust wrapper with slight wear at head and tail of spine, which is sunned. Extremities a little worn including corners and head and tail of spine. A little foxing of edges, but otherwise a very good copy. 1943 presentation inscription from author on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 14 pages of photographic plates, including frontispiece protected by tissue guard. An account of sixty years of the teaching of scientific botany since the Forster Education Act of 1870. It focuses on centres of teaching, including Repton School, Cambridge, London and Glasgow University and also examines The Oxford Press and the Annals of Botany, fossil botany and the emergence of pure physiology, etc. As a work of collective biography, it is illustrated with the portraits of a dozen notable botanist, with a frontispiece portrait of T. H. Huxley, first dean of the Normal School of Science at South Kensington. By Francis Orpen Bower, F.R.S. (1855-1948), who lectured in botany under Huxley and was professor of botany at the University of Glasgow, 188r5-1925.
