Illustrated by 5 black and white photographic plate, including portrait frontispiece. Autobiographical account by Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), critic, philosopher, biographer, man of letters and first editor of the Dictionary of National Biography. It was written for his immediate family after the death of his second wife, Julia, which had a great impact on their teenage daughters, who became Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. With a long biographical introduction by Alan Bell of the National Library of Scotland, who points out the influence of the event and her father's account on Woolf's later work, particularly To the Lighthouse.
