Notes
In spite of the title, this traveller's account covers the whole of the northern and eastern highlands, but does include several chapters on the northern isles. A companion volume, Scotland and the Scotch; or, The Western Circuit described a journey through the western highlands and isles. Both works were first published in 1840 and reprinted several times, before a combined edition appeared in 1859. Catherine Sinclair (1800-64) was a daughter of Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster (1754-1835), the famous Scottish agriculturist. She was best known as a novelist and children's writer.
