FIRST EDITION 8vo. 8.5 x 6 inches xxiv + 331 + [1] pp. Ex-Folkestone Public Library copy with stamps, label, etc. Bound in red library buckram, gilt, over red boards. A little wear to extremities and occasional foxing inside; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by photogravure frontispiece, title page vignette and by over 50 sketches, diagrams and photographs in text. A classic anthology on shepherds and shepherding collected from a wide variety of sources,, including such authors as William Howitt, Richard Jefferies, H. Rider Haggard and W. H. Hudson, to which the author has added accounts of her own (e.g. crooks and sheep bells). The sections include accounts of regional shepherding and sheep breeds, sheep dogs, marks and tallies, shearing and wool cloth, shepherd's dress, equipment and pastimes and pastoral folk lore. According to the Border Collie Museum web site, Adelaide Gosset (1855-1936) was born at Eltham and spent the first part of her life in Kent before residing in London and Chichester.
