An account of the 1952-53 Sahara University Expedition expedition from Algiers to Mount Kilimanjaro to study the problems of desertification, the desert's encroachment on fertile land and of water supply, led by the author. Richard St. Barbe Baker (1889-1982) was a biologist, botanist, environmental activist and prolific author. He advocated world wide reforestation and was behind the founding of Men of the Trees (now the International Tree Foundation) in 1922.
