FIRST EDITION. 8vo in fours. 9 x 5.75 inches. x + 156 pp. Copy lacks title page and the 3 plates. Bound in early half leather, gilt, over marbled boards. Spine in compartments with raised bands and black decorations and contrasting green title label, gilt. A little wear to extremities, including damage to spine label. Scattered foxing throughout and some water stains on top and inside margins in second half; otherwise a very good copy. A few early ink and pencil notes in text. Armourial bookplate of William John Mercer Illustrated by genealogical tables. An account of the pedigree of the Tufton family who held land in Sussex, at Hothfield in Kent and in various other parts of the country. They were created Earls of Thanet in 1628, a title which became extinct in 1849; many of them were buried in Rainham church. Robert Pocock, (1760-1830), printer and antiquary was the son of a grocer. He was educated at the Free School, Gravesend and after working with his father for a time he became a printer. His first printed History of Gravesend (1797) was the most substantial of his productions, all of which are very rare This copy was owned by William John Mercer of the Scottish family. the Mercers of Huntingtower, Perthshire (Appleton Studios and Mercer Millions websites).
