4to, in eights. 11 x 8 inches. 223 + [1] pp. index + 8 pp. publisher's catalogue. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with block of River Thames view on front board. Patterned endpapers. All edges gilt. Extremities worn, including corners with light foxing of preliminaries, scattered elsewhere ; otherwise a very good copy. 1900 presentation inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by numerous engravings in text, some from photographs and many whole page, including frontispiece and title page vignette. Well illustrated survey of London, part of a series by the author for the Religious Tract Society, which also included Ireland. Holland and the USA. Richard Lovett (1851-1904) graduated MA from the University of London in 1874 and although ordained as a minister in the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion, decided to devote his career to writing. In 1882 he became book editor of the Religious Tract Society and also developed an interest in foreign mission work and in the history of the Bible in English.
