Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A lieutenant-colonel of the Coldstream Guards was brought before a court martial charged with conduct unbecoming to an officer in that he drank beer with a corporal of the regiment at a pub in Oxford Street. Several witnesses were brought by the prosecution including Elizabeth Green, 'a woman whose appearance indicated that she did not belong to the most chaste or respectable part of society.' The court, however, chose instead to believe the witnesses provided by the defence proving that the colonel was elsewhere. He was acquitted and charges were to be laid against the corporal instead. In a 'dreadful accident at Blackheath Hill,' the horses drawing the Woolwich Tally-ho stage bolted and it overturned on a corner inflicting severe injuries on most of the sixteen persons on board. A fire caused by a lighted candle falling among hops as they were being packed, destroyed eight tons of hops stored at Hall Place, Barming. An auction to be held at Mersham Court-lodge advertised '1,000 capital Romney Marsh sheep' and a large stock of farming implements which are enumerated in detail, including three good wagons, five dung carts, bullock-yokes and chains and a cyder press and mill.
