Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. Mr. Brougham in the Commons introduced a debate on the increase of the influence of the crown. In Kent a severe fire broke out at Treasury Farm, Ickham, destroying several thatched buildings, including the cottage of 'an industrious shoemaker, and the workshop and yard timber of Mrs. Sharp, a carpenter and wheeler, as well as stacks of sainfoin and clover. The 1663 brick built farmhouse was little damaged. The Norwich Union and Kent Office fire engines were sent from Canterbury and managed to prevent further spread of the fire. A respectable labourer's wife of Sandwich, travelling towards Hartlip was stopped, dragged off the turnpike road, robbed, stripped of every garment and left naked and almost senseless at the roadside, by two men and a woman 'if such the latter may be termed.'
