Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and Hop Intelligence and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. A meeting was held at the Freemasons' Tavern in London to condemn the government's attempt in parliament to arraign Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged Queen of George IV. At the Old Bailey, Nancy Darter, 'a young female elegantly dressed, and evidently of superior manners,' was indicted for stealing money, silver spoons and clothing, the property of the man she had been living with. The defendant played on the sympathy of the court for a woman it considered to have been seduced and she was found not guilty; the prosecutor, Falck, being hissed and hooted out of court. A Hampshire man bet a hundred guineas that he could kill one hundred head of game in three days, but after ranging widely over Berkshire, lost the bet by three only, blaming faulty dogs on the second day. In Kent £37 in half-crowns was stolen from a house in Wateringbury while the inmates were in the hop ground. It was observed that the event showen the necessity and utility of those excellent institutions, Savings Banks.
