Notes
Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. Another seven columns are devoted to the continuing trial of Orator Hunt at York Assizes, in connection with the events of 16 August in what became known as the Peterloo Massacre. In Huddersfield there were serious disturbances; a mill was burned and great numbers of the lower orders were armed with pikes and pistols. In London indictments for high treason were found against the Cato Street conspirators and their trail was arranged. In Lancaster several men were charged with going armed to a seditious assembly and a smith with the manufacture of pike-heads. In Kent the Trustees of the Turnpike Road from Dover to Folkestone presented a silver coffee urn to the superintendent of alterations on Folkestone Hill.
