Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. The Commons debated the third reading of the Bill to prevent Seditious Meetings. Lord Folkestone considered the measure objectionable and dangerous but Mr. Honeywood, a member for Kent, claimed that the people were disaffected not towards the King and Constitution but to the Ministry and objected to any constitutional innovations. Lord John Russell introduced a debate on parliamentary reform; Lord Castlereagh, however, opposed a general measure, stating, 'The merit of the present system of representation was to be determined by its political results in a long series of ages,' although particular rotten boroughs like Grampound could be individually disfranchised by bills. The radical politician, John Cam Hobhouse (1786-1869) is arrested on a warrant from the Speaker for breach of privilege and taken to Newgate; the cause, apparently being some contemptuous remarks on the house in his anonymous pamphlet. In Kent the first Margate Winter Assembly took place attended by most of the beauty and fashion of the Isle of Thanet, affording opportunities for some 'chaste and elegant dancing' by several named ladies.
