Original issue of this newspaper containing a fascinating variety of notices and advertisements on the front page; the inside and back pages are a mixture of national and Kentish news and a Hop Intelligence and Corn Exchange section which supplies corn and other commodity prices. The Barnstaple Election of 1818 bribery case has passed form the Commons to the Devon Assizes. In the Rutland Assizes a young man of eighteen who has turned King's evidence against his accomplice in a case of highway robbery with violence is sentenced to death by the judge in spite of the jury's recommendation of mercy on account of his youth. In Plymouth Sophia Strapp, a servant gave notice to her employer, a surgeon, because she had observed 'some gross impropriety of conduct' with a Mrs Wright, resident in the house in the absence of his wife. The vengeful surgeon then distributed a handbill accusing Strapp of stealing a quantity of plate. On her bringing the case to court he is unable to substantiate this charge and she is awarded two hundred pound damages. Several other cases concern murder. It is now only three days before the Peterloo Massacre and the Gazette reports Orator Hunt's 'triumphal entry' into Manchester.
