8vo. 6.5 x 4.5 inches. xx + 130 pp. + 64 pp. publisher's catalogue. Bound in original red cloth, gilt, with blind stamped borders to boards and gilt spine decorations at head and tail. A little wear to extremities, sunning of spine and spotting of edges; otherwise a very good copy. Small bookplate. Optician's stamp on half title. Illustrated by 9 plates, including colour frontispiece and by 30 wood engraved text figures. Popular work on microscopy with an additional chapter on polarised light. It includes the preface to the third edition of about 1860. By Edwin Lankester (1814-74), surgeon and naturalist, who was one of the investigators of the London cholera outbreaks of the 1850s. He had a particular interest in water supply and was the first public analyst in England. Editions of this best selling title appeared from 1857-1918. Illustrated by Tuffen West, F.LS., F.R.M.S.
