8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. cii + 219 pp. Title page in red and black. Bound in green cloth, gilt, designed by Talwin Morris (1865-1911) in the Glasgow style. Rough cut edges. Many pages uncut. Minor wear to extremities and spine a little sunned. Foxing largely confined to edges and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. 'In the following pages my aim has been to sketch the development of criticism, and particularly of critical method, in England; and to illustrate each phase of its growth by one or two samples taken from the most typical writers' (p.v). The selected writers are Sidney, Dryden, Johnson, Coleridge, Hazlitt, Lamb, Shelley, Carlyle and Pater. With a long introduction by Charles Edwyn Vaughan (1854-1922), Professor of English Literature at the University of Leeds. First edition published 1896.
