Synopsis

Showing all the railways, junctions, and stations. drawn and engraved by john dower f.r.g.s.

Item Description

Folding, engraved map, hand-coloured and laid on to linen. 16 x 12 inches.

Notes

The map is hand-coloured to show the postal districts, parks and the river. The built up area and railways and underground lines and stations are emphasised, with circles showing a radius from Charing Cross. The map differs in some details from the 1870 example described in Hyde, having the explanation of symbols and scale bar placed at the top, instead of bottom right. Various changes and additions to the map (e.g. underground railway extensions) suggest that its date is closer to 1880 than 1870.
