Small 8vo. 7.25 x 4 inches. 54 + [2] pp., including bibliography and colophon. Title page and in red and black. Bound in original paper covered decorated boards. Minor wear to extremities, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated throughout by type specimens, fleurons and facsimiles, including frontispiece, in red and black. First edition of a history of printer's cast metal ornamental flower devices, or fleurons. John Ryder (1917-2001) was a typographer and book designer who was art director of The Bodley Head for thirty years from 1957. An attractive little book, well illustrated by typographical blocks and including specially cut Monotype matrices.
