This guide to the Kent coast is based on eight rides from Hythe, Sandgate, Folkestone, Dover, Walmer and Deal, Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate (including visits to the north coast as far west as the new town of Herne Bay). Edward Charles Mackenzie (1821-80) was educated at Oxford and ordained priest in 1845, serving curacies in London and Westminster and was later appointed minister at Berkeley Chapel, Mayfair and precentor of Chichester Cathedral. Elected FSA in 1861, Walcott was a prolific writer on abbeys, churches and cathedrals and other ecclesiastical and antiquarian subjects and also contributed about eight or nine other titles in this series published by Stanford on the coasts of English counties and regions. A scarce title; COPAC records only four copies at the BL, Oxford and Cambridge and the National Library of Scotland.
