FIRST EDITION. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. 208 + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth,gilt, decorated with gilt blocks on front board and spine. Board edges bevelled. All page edges gilt. Minor wear to extremities, corners and head and tail of spine, slight foxing of flyleaves and traces of the removal of inscription on first free endpaper; otherwise a very good clean copy. Illustrated by frontispiece, decorative title with green floral border and by numerous text figures, many whole page. Decorated by chapter heading vignettes. A work of fiction with dialogues in Lowland Scots, by Scottish Free Church Minister and author, John Watson (1850-1907), who wrote all of his fiction under the pseudonym of Ian Maclaren. His most popular work was Beside the Bonnie Briar Bush (1894), considered to be a key work of the Kailyard School of fiction, presenting an idealised vision of Scottish village life in the decades before 1914. Handsomely bound volume with the artwork of Frederick Charles Gordon (1856-1924), Canadian illustrator.
